Hitpoint Posting

I frequent two tech news sites: Hacker News, and Lobsters. The sites are similar, the content is similar, but the community on each of them is very different.

Lobsters: a bunch of tech enthusiasts that just want to talk about tech, and generally attempt to be good humans. It's referred to as "The Red site". The community does not welcome non-tech topics. There is no down-voting system, but there is a hide and a flag feature. If you don't like something - hide it. If you think it's really bad, flag it. No communal beat-downs over differing opinions.

Hacker News: a bunch of tech bros (or wannabes) virtue signaling, engaging in politics,  posting random things, and some tech stuff too. It's referred to as "The Orange site". The community does not welcome different opinions. Hint: don't say anything bad about Apple. Worst of all, it has a down-vote system that affects your reputation. So if you say something not completely in-line with everyone else, prepare to be down-voted to oblivion - at least until you delete your unpopular comment like a coward.

I noticed I interact with these sites differently, and gave the context above to help you understand too. I am very casual on Lobsters, but on Hacker News I noticed I intentionally up-vote / comment / post on things I know will get me a few points - that way I have enough Hitpoints (reputation) to withstand the down-votes the next time I express an opinion that isn't exactly aligned with everyone else.
